Crafting and selling toys in metal and wood, before plastics were dreamed of, and manufacturing stationery such as pencils, pen nibs and drawing compasses, he understood the need to give his customers what they wanted:

Emil was among the first to use photography to let his customers know what his products looked like, how they were packed, and how little they cost. He supplied party goods to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, just as we did for Queen Elizabeth in 2002.
